Two Ordinances from JesusOrdinances are prescribed ceremonies. Baptism is one of two ordinances Jesus gave to His followers. and the other one is Communion―or the Lord’s Supper.

Ordinances help us to remember important things. Ordinances commemorate significant events. The ordinances Jesus gave us were not created to commemorate Him for an egotistical need He had. Though we may struggle with a need to be remembered, Jesus has no such need. We, however, have a deep desire to remember Him.

Ordinances help us to remember Jesus’ love for us as we remember what He did (died for our sins) and what he is doing (transforming our lives). Ordinances help us align ourselves with Jesus’ will for our lives and inspire us to live as Jesus’ followers.

Ordinances are an outward declaration of an inward commitment to Jesus. Therefore, ordinances are both private (in the heart and mind of the individual) and public (in the setting they are expressed). Ordinances link the community of Christ (the church) together as they celebrate the active and present life of Christ in individuals and in the church community.

Baptism is a one-time public declaration of your reliance on Jesus for the salvation of your soul. Communion is an ongoing, regular celebration to remember what Jesus did (died for you) and to remember what He is going to do (come back for you).
